Return to Glory

Five months ago I camped at Morning Glory just as Victoria’s flood disaster was beginning. The Murray River was slowly rising and at that stage (early October), had already flooded some of the lower lying parts of the resort. But in the weeks that followed, the river rose even higher and most of the ground was left under water – some areas for 8-10 weeks. So I was keen to see how they had recovered, after such an enormous event.

Our comfy camping spot on grass and under shade

All parts of the resort have been reopened, but there is still evidence of the floods. Lots of trees have toppled over into the river. Many bear the marks of the high water level. The once pretty gardens are now looking a little dishevelled. And there are rows of sandbags in the less used areas of the place – mainly around the non-powered camping areas at the back of the resort. But on the whole, they’ve done a great job of getting things up and running again. I spoke to one of the owners who said they’d been flat out clearing debris and creating a new drainage system. Fortunately, their farm managed a reasonably good crop, so although they would have suffered massive losses to be out of action over part of the peak tourist period, things could have been worse. I’m sure the Glory will be looking tip-top again by spring.

Mala ‘swimming’ at the sandbar

Mala and I enjoyed our short stay. We got in a decent walk every morning – thankfully the walking tracks were most accessible, although we did have to do a bit of bushwacking to get around the wetlands area. And of course Mala did his best to drink up the river during his ‘swims’.

This is a terrific place to stay, and the staff are welcoming and relaxed. We’ll definitely be back.
