Lakes Entrance trip with family

Mon’s family are part-way through a month-long visit from Gurgaon. We decided I would join them on a short trip to Lakes Entrance.

I set off on the Sunday after the referendum, intending to stay at Bright or Freeburgh and then drive on the next day to Lakes. However, after stopping for a coffee at Milawa I heard that there were afternoon snow showers predicted for down to 1200 metres and snow down to 1600. So, rather than be held up the following day waiting for slippery roads to dry out, I decided to push through to Omeo. I found a free overnight camping spot right on the creek, where I was joined by three other parties for the night.

After a few spots of rain overnight followed by a light shower in the morning, we set off to Lakes Entrance – a more leisurely drive this time. The mountainous scenery is beautiful.

I arrived at Lakes Entrance just after midday, and Mon and the crew arrived around 3 pm. Mon had booked us at Silver Sands Caravan Park. I had a powered site, while Mon and family had 3 cabins. I don’t think I’ve seen a more well cared for park. There wasn’t a blade of grass out of place, and the amenities were spotless.

However, it was a horrible windy day, so I hunkered down in the van – with the roof down and safe – for the afternoon. I couldn’t believe they all ventured out for a walk in such blustery conditions. Thankfully, the next day was perfect.

Mon and I headed off for a walk along the coastal bush track to The Entrance where we were delighted to see Australian fur seals playing in the water. At lunch time, we were joined by an inquisitive kookaburra, who was obviously looking for a feed and flew straight at Mon when she walked outside with a bread roll for lunch.

The whole group repeated the foreshore walk in the afternoon, and we spent some time enjoying the sea views, birds and seals. All up, Mon and I walked about 15 km that day.

We left the next day, and I drove back over the mountain to Freeburgh (near Bright), after stopping for a walk at Bruthen. Mala and I camped at the local caravan park – a pretty place right on the Ovens River. And a reasonable price at $35, although I guess it was midweek and off-season. I was happy to see it was right near the bike trail, so we managed a morning walk before leaving for the 3-hour drive home.
