For years I’ve driven past the sign pointing to Greens Lake Campground at Corop. Two summers back, out of curiosity I decided to take the short detour on my way home to have a look. Immediately I knew why I’d always driven past it. The lake was almost empty, having recently been decomissioned as a water storage by GM Water. The smell of slowly drying mud, the swarms of flies, the neglected toilet block and parched vegetation seemed exacerbated by the 40+ degree heat that day. I couldn’t believe that anyone would want to camp in these conditions – yet there were 4 or 5 caravans here.
Then a couple of months ago I spotted a post on a Facebook group with fabulous photos and a review that made me want to take a second look. The lake had since been filled, thanks to floodwaters that were diverted there last summer, and I was assured that it was now quite a lovely place to stay.
So off we went, with plans to immediately go somewhere else if need be. But what a pleasant surprise! The lake was indeed almost full, and the early spring weather meant it was cool (very cool in the mornings) to warm and the lakeside vegetation quite green. There were many more people camped this time, but still plenty of space to spread out. I was so surprised, I called a friend to come and join me. And it wasn’t long before I was kicking myself that I’d only bought supplies for 2 days.

I’d like to return for a slightly longer stay while the lake is still so full. But I’d definitely avoid camping there in summer. There’s very little in the way of shade, with just a few eucalypts dotted along the edges of the lake. I’d also avoid school holidays. Being a free camp, it’s likely to be quite popular.
