Brisbane Valley Rail Trail

The past four or five years, I’ve done an annual winter trip up north to visit a friend in Toowoomba. Usually I just drive up (over 3 days), stay a few days, and drive back again.

This year was a little different. I opted to do a few days camping as well. And after my niece suggested Esk, I realised there was a rail trail passing through there – so some walking was also on the agenda.

I camped the first two nights at Esk – what a pretty little town. Mala and I walked a few kilometres of the rail trail each side of the town. This section was quite flat, sparsely vegetated and close to the road. Then I moved on to the showgrounds at Toogoolawah for another night, and another few kilometres of walking. Again, the terrain wasn’t all that engaging. My last night night was at a free camp right beside the rail trail in the tiny town of Linville. By this stage on the walk, the trail was much more interesting: more vegetation, hills and variation in elevation.

Next year, I plan to see more of the trail – perhaps starting at the Yarraman end. I’m hoping I might have my new van by then, and have it fitted with a cycle carrier so I can ride and cover a bit more ground.
