I’d planned a short camping trip this week, but the weather at my chosen destination was not looking good. The northwest of the state was about the only area that was going to be dry. So after having read lots of positive reports about the camping experience there, we headed off to Lake Lascelles at Hopetoun.

I was surprised to find so many people there, compared to most of my mid-week camping trips. But I’ve since heard it’s always pretty busy – possibly because it’s a free camp with pretty much all of the facilities of a caravan park, including some powered sites (for which there’s a quite reasonable fee of $20).
We ended up in a spot right at the end of the track that runs around the lake – a much smaller lake than most of the others I’ve camped at – and about a 400m walk from the nearest toilet block. The weather turned out to be perfect, with warm days and cool nights, and mostly no wind at all. We had a perfect position to watch the sun rise each morning, and I managed to capture a few shots on the iPhone.

The walk around the lake is only about 2 km, but there’s a track leading to a series of much longer walking tracks around the adjacent Lake Corrong.
While it’s not high up on my ‘must return’ list, I’d definitely be happy to visit again – but not on a weekend or during holidays when it must be pretty hectic.
