Down by Dhungala

I’m just home from three nights on the mighty Murray River (or ‘Dhungala’ as it is known to local indigenous families) at Morning Glory River Resort. The river was looking more powerful than usual – flowing fast and running so high we put a stick at the water’s edge to monitor the water level. Just a few hundred metres downstream and back upstream at nearby Barmah, the river has breached the banks causing moderate flooding.

Last time I was here, just over a year ago, I was camping on my own after an end to our final Covid lockdown. There was no one else around. This time Nadine, Chris and Kate came along so we had a lovely campfire each night, some communal meals, and Nadine made cocktails. Yum.

We managed a few reasonable walks, despite very wet tracks. We found the sandbar beach totally underwater, as were a few of the lower lying campground areas. We didn’t venture down to the wetland area. The dirt track to access it looked quite muddy near the start and I assumed the wetland would be totally flooded anyway.

Mala made a new friend in McClane – the very fluffy border collie Chris is dogsitting in Echuca. They entertained us with zoomies around the campsite and some fairly odd play manouevres – McClane shoving her bottom in Mala’s face, and Mala trying to tip her over by biting at her legs. Now we know they get along, we can plan some more playdates in the future.
